On a trip to Idaho in 2012, Dr. Richard Whitten invited me into his home laboratory. I was just getting started photoing butterflies at the time. I had been to a few butterfly houses and some parks with Todd Stout for wild butterfly adventures. Dr. Whitten lived across the street from where my friend’s parents had retired. He explained where his collection was from, how he became one of the foremost Entomologists of Costa Rica. He opened display boxes and proudly showed off the colors of Asia and South America. He explained curating collections and donating his specimens to the museums. Most of all I think he enjoyed the company of a new friend and some interest in his collection.
